Can I replace my slip-on bathtub spout with a longer spout?

My current bathtub spout is only 5.25 inches long, so when the water is on, it hits the rim of my bathtub. This causes the water to pool along the grout and splash around. The spout has a set screw (hex wrench style), so I'm uming it's a slip-on spout. Can I replace this with a longer bathtub spout without having to extend the pipe that protrudes from the wall? I read someplace you for screw-on spouts, the length of a replacement spout is supposed to match, but I wasn't sure if this was the case for a slip-on spout.
